Angela Thi Bennett is an attorney practicing in the areas of corporate, real estate, commercial transactions, and community development.
The daughter of a Vietnamese mother and an African-American father, Ms. Bennett emigrated with her family from Saigon, Vietnam in 1975, settling in East Cleveland where she attended East Cleveland public schools. As a young mother, she graduated from Shaw High School, then continued her education at Case Western Reserve University where she received her B.A., J.D. and M.B.A.
Prior to private practice, Ms. Bennett served as director of the East Cleveland Department of Community Development and was head of the Department of Building and Housing. She is a member of the Case Western Reserve University Law Alumni Association Board, Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Asian American Bar Association of Cleveland. Ms. Bennett is also a member of Jack and Jill of America and a volunteer for Junior Achievement. She formerly served on the Board of Directors of Cleveland Reads, Inc., now Starting Point.
In the East Cleveland community, Ms. Bennett was instrumental in rallying support to build two donated playgrounds, and led a collaborative initiative which earned East Cleveland national recognition as a “Playful City USA” and a $25,000 grant to build another playground. She also helped create a health and development committee to assess and develop strategies to improve the health of the community.
Also an entrepreneur, she was the owner/operator of a gourmet coffee concession and a retail fashions accessories kiosk in Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Ms. Bennett has three children and resides in East Cleveland. She was appointed to the State Board of Education by Gov. John Kasich in February 2011.
