Mary Rose Oakar served in three legislative bodies. She was a Member of Cleveland City Council, a 16-year Member of the United States Congress, and a Member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2000-2002.
Her business experience includes President and CEO of Mary Rose Oakar and Associates, Inc. Additionally, Ms. Oakar taught at various higher education institutions in Ohio, which included being a professor at Cuyahoga Community College, and a high school teacher at Lourdes Academy and East High. Currently, she is president of ADC, Inc.
An avid community member, Ms. Oakar is an active, lifelong member of St. Patrick Church (Bridge Ave.) in Cleveland; a member of the Housing Board for Project Afford; a volunteer at the West Side Hunger Center; a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, and is a member of the “Former Members of U.S. Congress.”
Ms. Oakar received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ursuline College and a Master of Arts degree from John Carroll University. She did further studies at Westham Adult College in Worchester, England, and received honorary doctorate degrees from Ashland University, Baldwin Wallace College, St. Mary’s College-Notre Dame, Trinity College in Washington, D.C. and Ursuline College.
As the State Board member representing District 11, Ms. Oakar serves approximately two-thirds of Cuyahoga County and one-third of Lake County. Her term expires on Dec. 31, 2016.
